Does air have mass?



As we previously noted, air consists of matter, and any matter has a mass. In order to prove that air has mass, each student is required to conduct the following experiment and post the results for comparison.

The Experiment:

Material:
- Any balloon
- Precise digital scale (found in your school science labs)
- Recording chart

Procedure:
1- Record the mass of an empty balloon by placing it on the scale.
2- Inflate the balloon half-way, and record its mass.
3- Inflate the balloon fully, and record its mass.
4- Deflate the balloon completely, and record its mass.

Now, in order to find the mass of the air inside the balloon subtract the results of steps 2-3-4 from the result of step 1 individually. You will realize that after deflating the balloon, its mass will go back to what it was at the beginning of the experiment

What does the Air consist of?


Air consists of matter. It is a combination of different gases, which are themselves made up of tiny moving bits.
The circle graph above shows the percentages of gases that create the mix of air. Nitrogen takes up the largest part of air whereas oxygen takes up less than a third of that part. A very small part of the mixture is taken by other gases, which include carbon dioxide and water vapor. Oxygen gas is vital to almost all living things.

Air is odorless, tasteless, and unseen. Its presence can be seen in everyday life as it interferes with visible physical matter. You see it blow away a candle, carry a piece of tissue, or transport small particles of dust and leaves from one place to another.
