Does air have mass?



As we previously noted, air consists of matter, and any matter has a mass. In order to prove that air has mass, each student is required to conduct the following experiment and post the results for comparison.

The Experiment:

Material:
- Any balloon
- Precise digital scale (found in your school science labs)
- Recording chart

Procedure:
1- Record the mass of an empty balloon by placing it on the scale.
2- Inflate the balloon half-way, and record its mass.
3- Inflate the balloon fully, and record its mass.
4- Deflate the balloon completely, and record its mass.

Now, in order to find the mass of the air inside the balloon subtract the results of steps 2-3-4 from the result of step 1 individually. You will realize that after deflating the balloon, its mass will go back to what it was at the beginning of the experiment

The inflated balloon really had more mass than the deflated balloon. This means the air inside the balloon had mass. Then it must be or contain matter!

But how do we know it's accurate? I mean when we blow the balloon we do release liquids as well (saliva) right?

Lene, the mass of saliva in the balloon should be negligible, I hope. If you want to be more accurate, feel free to use an air pump.
